FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  •  Will my medical aid cover my stay or treatments at the Hydro?

Medical aid does not cover accommodation at The Hydro. However, you may be able to claim for certain treatments, such as Biokinetics and Chiropractic. Please check with your own Medical Aid for information.

  • Are you wheel-chair friendly?

No, unfortunately not. The Hydro is built on the side of the mountain, so various flights of stairs do need to be negotiated.

  • Can I come to The Hydro post-operatively?

We deliver excellent palliative care that is ideal for most post-operative recovery. However, The Hydro is not a medical facility and we would require a detailed medical note from your surgeon prior to the confirmation of your booking.  We can also assist by monitoring you and providing dietary guidelines during your recovery process.

  • How much weight can I expect to lose at The Hydro?

Many factors need to be taken into consideration that mitigate against a definitive response to this question.  Our Health Advisors are qualified to discuss these factors in consultation with you after you arrive. Naturally, much will depend on the length of your stay as well as your willingness to adhere to their suggestions and those of our fitness consultants.

  • Why are my treatment options limited during pregnancy?

During pregnancy it is not advisable to subject the body to temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius.  Also, certain essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy since exposure may cause harm to the unborn baby.

  • Why may I not have hydrotherapy without supervision?

The Hydrotherapy treatment is a series of water therapies that are stimulating to the circulatory system and may result in blood pressure fluctuations. In addition, there are changes occurring in the body due to the effect of The Hydro diet. All of these may cause sudden weakness, dizziness or fainting.  As your custodians during your time at The Hydro, it is non-negotiable that all Hydrotherapy sessions are properly supervised by one of our trained members of staff.

  •  Why do you not serve animal protein?

The Hydro diet focuses on detoxification and cleansing.  A plant-based diet is known to be most effective in promoting health, vitality and longevity.  A further deterrent is the wide-spread use of antibiotics and growth hormones in animal husbandry practices. Needless to say, these are contraindicated during the detoxification process.

  • Will I have enough to eat?

Yes, definitely.  There are 3 buffet meals served daily, meaning that you can eat as much healthy food as you like. (See Nutrition)  Snacks include vegetable juices and detox soup. Juice Fasts are optional.

  • Does The Hydro diet cater for diabetics?

Yes, our low GI (Glycaemic Index) diet promotes stabilisation of blood glucose levels and our Health Advisors are qualified to assist you in making further dietary choices during your stay.  We are very happy to accommodate your specific dietary requirements.

  • Which treatments are contraindicated in active cancer?

Hydrotherapy, Swedish Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, all treatments involving wraps,  Ionithermie Anti-Cellulite and LPG are not advised at this time.

  • I am following a banting diet. Can I continue with it during my stay?

Yes, of course. During your consultation with one of our resident Naturopaths, you will be guided towards increasing your quota of vegetarian fats and proteins while decreasing your intake of high carbohydrate vegetables.

  • Can one receive treatment at your facility for substance abuse or eating disorders?

We are not a specialised rehabilitation unit and would advise that prior to booking at The Hydro a relationship be established with a professional who is qualified to provide guidance and counselling.  Nevertheless, The Hydro is a  highly suitable facility for addressing underlying stress, providing stress-management tools and providing detoxification procedures and diet.
